prevalent among many Christian converts. This feature of Govern- -ment policy was welcomed by the Cantonese and the dismissal from office of the Commissioner of Education, Hr. Chung, a perfervid Christian who sought to abolish from government schools the ancient homage paid by scholars to the sage, was made the occasion of celebrating on a larger scale than usual the anniversary of
the birthday of Confuscius on September 27. On the other hand
missionaries are pleased to note that the rush of "enquirers" of
doubtful sincerity, which set in after the revolution, is now to
some extent checked.
Finally, from a general aspect, the change of government has
been acquiesced in by the Cantonese without a manmır. Always most
assertive of what they deem to be their rights and privileges, they
now find themselves ruled by a Governor who to them is a foreigner, supported by foreign troops who despise them and by an officialdon
selected for holding political convictions diametrically opposite
to their own: but they make no protest. Their recollection of past
revolutionary troubles and of the maladministration and peculations of their own chosen leaders is too fresh and their business
instinct too keen to admit of their not being satisfied with what promises to be a more stable and sufficient government than they
have known for the last three years.
The Financial Problem.
No advance has yet been made towards the solution of the two problems with which the provincial government has struggled so long, that is, the paper currency question and the suppression of
brigand age.
In regard to the former, further complications were introduc- -ed by the recent revolutionary troubles. A big slump in local notes followed the declaration of independence, when they feell to a merely nominal value. By the end of September they had recovered considerably and the discount stood at about 30% on Hong.ong notes. It is commonly believed that the huge sums which many of the late officials are alleged to have realised during their brief tenures
